Warmer temperatures result in maladaptive learning of sexual preferences

چکیده
The impact of learning ability and sexual selection on the climate biodiversity crisis is currently unclear. Using African butterfly Bicyclus anynana, which shows strong phenotypic plasticity (i.e., polyphenism) in response to temperature, we tested whether affects mate preferences under warming. We first modelled warming scenarios then showed experimentally that temperature becomes an unreliable cue onset dry season, adult butterflies displayed wet season rather than form. Experienced females were exposed different male seasonal phenotypes during maturation changed preferences. Female fertilization success was reversed for naive compared with experienced females, likely reducing female fitness following Our results emphasize importance selection, learning, their consequences understanding (mal)adaptation natural populations Read free Plain Language Summary this article Journal blog.

Warmer ambient temperatures depress liver function in a mammalian herbivore.
Diet selection in mammalian herbivores is thought to be mainly influenced by intrinsic factors such as nutrients and plant secondary compounds, yet extrinsic factors like ambient temperature may also play a role. In particular, warmer ambient temperatures could enhance the toxicity of plant defence compounds through decreased liver metabolism of herbivores. Temperature-dependent toxicity has be...
متن کاملWarmer temperatures reduce the vectorial capacity of malaria mosquitoes
The development rate of parasites and pathogens within vectors typically increases with temperature. Accordingly, transmission intensity is generally assumed to be higher under warmer conditions. However, development is only one component of parasite/pathogen life history and there has been little research exploring the temperature sensitivity of other traits that contribute to transmission int...
متن کاملStudents’ Perceived Heat-Health Symptoms Increased with Warmer Classroom Temperatures
Temperatures in Africa are expected to increase by the end of the century. Heat-related health impacts and perceived health symptoms are potentially a problem, especially in public schools with limited resources. Students (n = 252) aged ~14-18 years from eight high schools completed an hourly heat-health symptom log over 5 days. Data loggers measured indoor classroom temperatures. A high propor...
